Captain
Background and PersonalityHistoryAlthough not much is revealed about her past, it is said that she
has been a captain for at least 200 years; along with fellow captains
Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto,
Jūshirō Ukitake and
Shunsui Kyōraku.
It is stated that the four of them have been Captains of the Gotei 13
for at least 200 years as of 110 years ago before the current time.
This makes her one of the oldest captains among the Gotei 13, despite
her rather youthful appearance. Ukitake also refers to her as "Senpai"
denoting her seniority to both him and Shunsui.
[6] Approximately 110 years ago she is seen waiting for the
promotion ceremony to begin at the 1st Division Headquarters along with
the rest of the assembled captains. She witnesses the arrival of the
newly appointed Captain of the
12th Division,
Kisuke Urahara. Her lieutenant at this time was
Seinosuke Yamada.
[7]9 years later, Unohana is present at a emergency meeting called
by Captain-Commander Yamamoto when he decides to create a investigation
team to locate the missing
9th Divisionsquad members. When he gives out orders, Yamamoto orders Unohana to
prepare the relief stations for casualties, but Unohana interrupts and
asks if it wouldn't be better for her to tend to the wounded there.
Yamamoto plainly tells her that he can't send healers out without
knowing what the situation is like.
PersonalityUnohana has a gentle and warm personality that augments her
appearance. Unohana is a soft-spoken, polite, and caring woman who uses
honorifics when addressing everyone, including her subordinates and the
enemy. She rarely shows any signs of panic or distress, and has a great
sense of duty, shown in the times that she orders
Hanatarō Yamada’s imprisonment and Isane Kotetsu’s chasing of
Renji Abarai when he runs away with
Rukia Kuchiki.
With her grace and kind manners, she lets others know quietly that
while she may be soft, she is not to be taken lightly. Despite her
gentle nature, several members of the
Eleventh Division[3] and even her fellow Captains fear her.
[4]
Also according to the former captains of the
5th and
7th Division,
respectively, she can be very frightening as the look on their faces
implied they would never want to get on her bad side (they noted that
being destroyed by
Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryūsai's
Bankai would be a preferable fate). No one has ever disputed this fact, for she is an indispensable part of
Soul Society and the Gotei 13 Squads.
Unohana likes strong flavored food, preferring it to bland tasting dishes. In her free time, she climbs mountains throughout
Rukongai, during these excursions, she collects medicinal herbs. Once a month, she holds an
ikebana class for the members of her division.
[5] Unohana is also the President of the
Ikebana Club (Flower Arranging Society.)

Captain Unohana walked quietly through the general relief station of squad 4. The fighting with Aizen had created many wounded and it was her duty to treat them. She sighed as she thought of what she was entrusted to do, healing them and sending them back to fight again. She continued walking, glancing as the nurses continued their work attending the patients and providing treatment. Whispers filled the room as the staff compared data and statuses of the patients in recovery. She came to one of her more critical patients and bent to check his condition. It was as she feared, the medication was having little to no effect and even her healing kido was doing nothing more than keeping the poor shinigami alive.
When do I stop treatment and allow him to have the dignity of death? His soul is in agony, even if no one can see the struggle he is facing, can I really prolong his suffering?
She quietly rested the back of her hand against his cool, damp forehead, noting the lack of spiritual reaction to her presence. His color had not improved and it looked as it wasn't going to, at this rate he was not going to... She shifted her attention swiftly to the alarming machine as the ventilator tried pushing air into the resisting man's lungs. He was fighting the only thing keeping him alive. She made a slight gesture and a few whispered words, a muted flash of white light enveloped the patient and he was soon still. Slowly the machine began again to provide the man with his life breath, in and out, in and out. The machine had no thought for the patient, for his pain, not even for her. The IV slowly dripped in unison, counting down the minutes of life the man had left.
Unohana stood up from her patient,
I will have one of the nurses assigned to him keep watch tonight. Tomorrow will bring more information, and then I can decide, but not tonight. She sighed for the second time, walking towards the station where the nurses had clustered, the night was far from over.
