Character Types
Human: The humans of Bleach are much like the residents of modern Japan, and most cannot see or sense disembodied spirits in any way. Spirits can, however, inhabit artificial human bodies called gigai which are visible to ordinary humans. One in 50,000 humans is a medium with some awareness of nearby spirits, but only a third of these are able to see them clearly, and only the strongest of mediums are able to speak with or touch spirits. Certain unique humans naturally have both the power to sense and the strength to fight with spirits. Ordinary humans can gain the ability to interact with spirits by spending time around a large source of spirit energy.
Plus: Benign spirits in Bleach are known as pluses (wholes in the official English editions). A plus is the spirit of a person who has died. A chain, known as the Chain of Fate, protrudes from the chest and binds the plus to a location, object or person that they felt close to in life. The soul can move about freely if the chain is broken, but this also causes the chain to corrode. Normally, pluses are sent to Soul Society by Soul Reapers in a ritual called soul burial before this corrosion becomes significant. If the Chain of Fate is corroded entirely before a soul burial can be performed, a hole will form in the chest of the soul where the chain was once anchored. Such souls are driven mad and become evil spirits known as hollows. If the Chain of Fate is torn out deliberately, this also leads to spiritual degradation.
Soul Reaper: Soul Reapers, or shinigami as they are called in Japanese-language releases, are the psychopomps of Bleach. They are souls with inner spiritual power, recruited from the ranks of the residents and nobility of Soul Society. Like all spirits, they cannot be detected by normal humans. Soul Reapers use their zanpakutō, supernatural swords that are the manifestation of their owners' power, to perform soul burials on pluses. Soul Reapers also use zanpakutō and magic known as kidō to fight their archrivals, the hollows. A group of Soul Reapers known as the pussy have obtained hollow powers, gaining removable masks and access to certain hollow abilities.
Hollow: The hollows are the major antagonists of Bleach. They are evil spirits who reside in Hueco Mundo but travel to the living world to feed on the souls of the living and dead alike. Like Soul Reapers, hollows are made of spiritual matter and cannot be detected by ordinary humans. While the majority of hollows can be overcome by the average Soul Reaper, there are some which surpass even the most elite Soul Reapers in strength. All normal hollows wear white masks, but a small group of hollows have broken them, becoming arrancar. By shattering their masks, these hollows regain the ability to reason, sometimes obtain a humanoid form, and gain access to Soul Reaper powers.
Quincy: The Quincy are a clan of spiritually aware humans who once fought against the hollows, using bows composed of spiritual energy to slay them. As opposed to Soul Reapers, Quincy absorb and channel energy from their surroundings to fight. Unlike the Soul Reaper's method of killing hollows which allows the hollow to enter Soul Society, the Quincy technique simply destroys the hollow's soul entirely. This method has the propensity to shatter the balance of the universe, because when souls are destroyed, the number of souls entering and leaving Soul Society cannot remain equal. This issue prompted the Soul Reapers to conduct a campaign to exterminate the Quincy about 200 years before the main storyline. At least two Quincy still remain.
Artificial soul: Artificial souls (also known as Modified Souls, or Mod Souls) are a type of soul mass-produced by the Soul Reapers. Issued in pill form, they are used to force Soul Reapers out of their gigai during protracted stays in the living world, and also to evict pluses that refuse to leave their bodies after death. They come with a pre-programmed personality that animates the host body until the owner returns. In addition to the mundane versions, a series of experimental souls authorized and created by Soul Reaper researchers exists. Known as modified souls, these were meant to hunt hollows by possessing soulless human bodies and supercharging a particular aspect of them (for example, strength or speed). The Soul Reapers decided to scrap the project due to the inhumanity of forcing dead bodies to fight, and ordered the destruction of all modified souls. Only one modified soul exists in the manga (Kon), but there are three more such characters in the anime.
Bount: Exclusive to the anime, the Bounts are a clan of human beings with high spiritual energy and special powers. They were accidentally created by Soul Reaper scientists looking for a way to create eternal life. Bounts consume the souls of human beings to survive; theoretically, a Bount could live forever by doing so. Although the Bounts have a strict rule to consume only the souls of the dead, the final group of Bounts chose to drain souls from living humans in order to become more powerful. Each Bount uses a "doll" in combat, a type of familiar possessing its own special abilities. Every doll is unique and is a manifestation of the user's power. If the doll is destroyed, its owner is destroyed as well.

Ichigo Kurosaki-The main character of Bleach is Kurosaki, Ichigo. The series is named after Ichigo's trademark—and natural—'Bleach' blond hair. However, as a consequence of the outrageous coloring of his hair, he is constantly badgered by adults, who stereotype him as a punk, and other teenagers who think he's copying their own bleached hair. Despite his appearance, Ichigo is very intelligent. In order to keep the teachers out of his hair, he spends almost all of his free time studying, since he doesn't do any clubs. If nothing else, his high test scores bring looks of astonishment from friends and teachers alike. However, just like his appearance, Ichigo is one big, tough bad boy. In a fight, even with opponents outnumbering him 3 to 1, it is almost a guarantee that Ichigo will win. His finishing move the "Kurosaki Face Stomp" (a simple, but obviously powerful kick to the face) makes many appearances early on in the manga against your everyday thug.
However, behind all the brutality, Ichigo is actually a very kind person. He has a penchant for helping those before his eyes. If Ichigo could help you, he would. Of course, if this was the only thing that separated Ichigo from other hero-complex characters, then this would be a very boring and repetitive plot line. However, Ichigo isn’t just another character with a hero-complex. Ichigo can see ghosts, more formally known as Hollows and Pluses. Theories wise, it is a distinct possibility that Ichigo, as well as the rest of the Kurosaki children, inherited this ability from their mother. However, in comparison to most other humans, his family included, Ichigo's spiritual strength is far beyond any human limits. As the story progresses, many of Ichigo's friends develop abilities of their own, or even have their own powers amplified, thanks to the multiple cases of exposure to Shinigami Ichigo. However, even before he had the ability to transform into a shinigami, several of his friends were slowly developing the ability to see spirits. Thus, it is also a possibility that the constant presence of Ichigo’s spiritual strength has enhanced the latent abilities of his friends.
Initially, Ichigo took the shinigami power in order to save his family, but, when the responsibility is thrust onto him, he decided that he would fight for no one else, but himself, and his own principles. However, when presented with the scenario where he must make a decision to save someone, or not, he has always fought to the best of his ability, many times, surpassing all expectations of his abilities. Throughout the story, Ichigo has fought for many things. In his first encounter with a hollow (Fish Bone D), he braved death in order to save his family. Then, he fought to save his friends. Next, he fought for the safety of his town, Karakura, helping to take down Menos Grande in the process. His battle with Grand Fisher to appease his own guilt for his mother’s death has yet to be concluded. Now, he is fighting to save Kuchiki Rukia, forging through spiritual boundaries, to do so.
Rukia Kuchiki- Rukia is a shinigami from the Soul Society. She first appears in Ichigo's room while chasing a hollow, but when things go wrong her powers get transferred to Ichigo. Without her abilities, she is unable to return to the Soul Society and is forced to inhabit a gigai, or temporary body. Rukia then attends Karakura High School as a member of Ichigo's class.
Although her exact age is unknown, she tells Ichigo she has lived at least 10 times as long as him. She has various shinigami accoutrements including a cell phone that receives orders from the Soul Society, a device that can alter memories, and a glove that can separate someone's spirit from their body. Despite her long life, Rukia is rather naïve about many things in modern society (ie juice boxes). She learns current lingual trends from reliable sources such as horror manga. Rukia resided in Ichigo's closet while in the living world.
While waiting for her abilities to return, Rukia trained Ichigo in the ways of shinigami. According to her, she got top marks in her demon arts classes. Her personality varies depending on whom she is with. In front of her classmates she is demure and polite. When acting in her official capacity as a shinigami however, she is very decisive and assertive. Nothing is remotely shy about her then. With Ichigo, she often switches between wise sage and argumentative adversary at the blink of an eye. Their usual activity is to fight and yell at each other. Despite this, Rukia seems closest to Ichigo, and she shows a great deal of sympathy for him and his feelings.
When Rukia realizes she is becoming too attached to the living world, she quickly leaves Ichigo to protect him. Her childhood friend Renji and older brother Byakuya soon confront her. They tell her that she is to be executed by the Soul Society. She tries to prevent Ichigo from fighting them. However, when things go wrong for Ichigo, Rukia seemingly turns on him in an effort to protect him from Byakuya. She feels very guilty for dragging him into the situation, and sacrifices herself in an effort to save Ichigo. While in her various holding cells in the Soul Society awaiting her execution, she seems depressed but accepting of her fate.
A few things are known about her past. As a child, Rukia lived in one of the poorest parts of the Soul Society, area 78 of Rikongai. It was a very rough place to live, and crime was rampant. One day she helped a group of kids keep out of trouble. She became their spiritual leader and inspiration. One of the young men was Renji, and the two of them grew up together. They vowed to become shinigami together, but were separated 40 years prior to her meeting Ichigo by the Kuchiki family. The Kuchiki family was one of the noble families, and it wanted to adopt her. This would allow her to graduate early and become a member of the 13th division. She assented and got the family that she and Renji had wanted. Her relationship with her new older brother Byakuya however was rocky at best.
The Shiba family and Rukia herself feel she is responsible for the death of a fellow shinigami, Shiba Kaien. Rukia held a great deal of affection for Kaien, but he became possessed by a hollow. Rukia was forced to kill him to destroy the hollow. It is pointed out by Byakuya that Kaien and Ichigo share a certain resemblance.
Rukia holds a great deal of confidence in Ichigo, but she also feels that she has caused him a great deal of pain and changed his life forever. This causes her a great deal of guilt because she feels she can never make it up to him. As her execution begins, her final request is that Ichigo and the others from the living world be allowed to return safely. During the execution itself, her final thought is of Ichigo. When the smoke clears however Ichigo is standing before her and it appears that Rukia may have just received a stay of execution
Yoruichi Shihouin-Taking the form of a black cat, Yoruichi is said to be Urahara's only relative. She first appears to tell Urahara that Renji and Byakuya have arrived, and they both seem to be expecting this. She trains Chad and Orihime and then enters the Soul Society with the group going to rescue Rukia. Yoruichi heals Ichigo after his fight with Kenpachi, and goes once again to his aid when he is fighting Byakuya. Byakuya reveals that Yoruichi had disappeared a few hundred years before and was presumed dead. He also explains that she is the ex-commander of special operations and ex-general of the keigun brigade of the 1st division. Byakuya refers to her as "senpai" and is unable to defeat her, a trend he is apparently continuing from their previous acquaintance. Yoruichi whisks Ichigo away to the cavern that Urahara built for their combat training, and it is there that she vows to teach Ichigo to reach bankai in three days. As with Urahara, Yoruichi's motives remain unclear, but she seems to have been involved in whatever plans Urahara had made.
Tatsuki Arisawa-This is Ichigo's class mate and Orihime's best friend. Her and Ichigo grew up together, meeting in a karate class when they were 4. She is very strong for a girl and over protective of Orihime. She does not like the normal things girls seem to like such as makeup and boys but is a tomboy who is rough on the edges.
Gran Fisher- This is the hollow that killed Ichigo's mother - one that he swears to defeat. This hollow takes the form of a girl, but when she does battle she goes into the brain of the "hollow" that follows her. Once one of her bodies (the girl or the hollow) are defeated, she just retreats to the other one. She has the ability to look into people's memories and then display the one person that they cannot kill, and therefore leaves them open to attack.
Orihime Inoue-One of Ichigo's classmates who has a very big crush on him, but is afraid to act on it. She lost her brother in a car accident many years ago, and he came back as a hollow to eat her soul. Just before he did it, he realized that this would not make her happy and that what he was doing was wrong and so he "cleansed himself" by making himself dissapear. After being in contact with Ichigo's shinigami form, her spiritual power was awakened.
Uryuu Ishida-He is the last surviving quincy, and has a deep seeded hatred for all Shinigami because his sensei died fighting hollows when the Shinigami were late to show up. He challenges Ichigo by putting out hollow bait and thus attracting alot of hollows, so much that they couldnt not handle them all. Ishida and Ichigo then team up to beat the hollows and save the city.
Kon- Kon is a modified soul that was created by soul society to fight hollows. In creating him, they gave him more strength than they would normally, so when he is free he can do amazing things. By mistake on the Uraha shop, he is inserted into Ichigo's body while Ichigo takes his Shinigami form. During this period he explores the human world, by impressing people and showing off his ability. Once it is realize what has happend, he is tracked down and removed from Ichigo's body and paced in the body of a teddy bear. After this he began to idolize Rukia and he sometimes fills in for Ichigo when Ichigo must leave his body to fulfill his Shinigami duties.
Isshin Kurosaki-The father of the Kurosaki family, he is a widower, who is the neighborhood doctor, and the only one in their family who can't see ghosts at all. He is very overprotective of Ichigo (As he makes him come in every night by 7:00 pm) and is very strict on the rules. He uses physical violence to tend to matters that he is not very good at talking about, and wishes his son would communicate more with him. We find more out about his life as a soulreaper later on in the series.
Karin Kurosaki-Ichigo's little sister who, although she can see ghosts (in a blurred way), claims she doesnt believe in them - but if the opprotunity presents itself, she will try to make money off of her ability.
Masaki Kurosaki- This is Ichigo's mother who died 6 years ago. She was the most wonderful beautiful woman Ichigo has ever seen and he loved her very much. She died trying to protect him from getting killed - thus proving her love for him. She is near to the hearts of the whole Kurosaki family, and they visit her grave on the day she died every year in her memory. (no picture)
Yuzu Kurosaki- Ichigo's other younger sister who looks up to him and envies that he can see ghosts so well. She wants to some day be able to see ghosts as well as he can. She feels like its her responsibility to help maintain the family since their mother died.
Yasutora Sado (Chad)-Chad is Ichigo's very large friend, who seems to be incredibly strong. He is able to even hold a steel beam on his back, as well as endure being hit by a car and many other accidents. He has a parakeet that has a goul's soul in it as well, and this parakeet brings about the death of every one of its owners. After coming in contact with Ichigo's shinigami form, his spiritual powers were awakened and he was able to defeat a hollow.
Kisuke Urahara-This is the manager of the Uraha shop, who has an unshaven face and wears a beach hat most of the time. He cares alot about the reputation of the shop and tries his best to provide his costomers with the products that they want. When he realizes the mistake he made in giving Rukia a mod soul, he descides he will fix the problem himself. He seems to have some abilities, but at this point he mostly remains a mystery.
Jinta Hanakari- This is a young boy who works at the Uraha shop. He likes to fantasize about being the worlds best baseball player and often neglects his work.
Tessai- He is a middle aged man who works for the Uraha shop. He is under the manager but still tends to take control of the two children working there. The children - although they would not admit it - seem to be somewhat afraid of him.
Ururu- This is a young girl who works at the Uraha shop with Jinta. Although she is 3 years yonger than Jinta, she provides the voice of reason in telling him that they should be working instead of playing.
